Twitter Says It Is Adding 'Context' to Trending Topics; Facebook and Google at War With Australian Government - SFist

Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:35 PM PDT

Ahead of the latest U.S. election, Twitter is responding to criticism that one of its defining features, the Trending Topics sidebar, tends to promote misinformation and conspiracies. And Facebook and Google are facing stiff government regulation in Australia that could cause them to severely curtail how the two sites function Down Under.

Twitter announced Tuesday that it will be adding context to the items in the Trending Topics module, in an effort to prevent it from being gamed by bots and internet trolls as it has been frequently in the past. As the New York Times reports, the move stops short of just killing off the popular feature altogether, which some employees had been pushing for. Some users have also made the hashtag "#UntrendOctober" start trending, pushing the company to simply turn off Trending Topics until the November election.

A couple of recent examples of insane things that have landed on the Trending Topics lineup, per the Times: "In July, white nationalists pushed the anti-Semitic hashtag #JewishPrivilege until it became a trend, and QAnon, a pro-Trump conspiracy group, made Wayfair, the furniture company, trend on Twitter with false claims that the company engaged in child trafficking."

"Trends show what everyone is talking about right now," say Twitter product manager Frank Oppong and product trust partner Liz Lee in a blog post. "But too often, we look at one word or phrase trending on Twitter and ask, 'why is this trending?' That question was actually Tweeted over half a million times over the last year! It should be easier to understand what's being said immediately."

The company says that some trending topics will now get a description or a representative tweet pinned to them to explain the trend. And other things may get nixed altogether by human curators or an algorithm, if they don't reflect an actual trend.

"To be clear, we know there is more work to do to improve trends and the context updates we're announcing today are just a small step in the right direction," Oppong and Lee say.

Meanwhile, Facebook is facing a tough road ahead in Australia with regard to being a platform for sharing media stories. The Australian government's anti-competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, is currently drafting a bill that would require Facebook to pay media companies for any of their content that appears on Facebook. The law would require something similar of Google, which is as the New York Times explains, could lead to a rise in misinformation, as it could arguable make reliable news sources less easy to find.

Australian authorities say they are acting in the best interests of the country, and favoring Australian media interests who are struggling amid sinking ad sales. But Facebook and Google say that such a move would make it impossible for them to keep their services free to consumers.

Lebanese Turn Their Back on 'Hopeless' Country After Blast - The New York Times

Posted: 31 Aug 2020 07:15 AM PDT

BEIRUT — Days after the port explosion that ravaged Beirut, a news anchor at a little-watched state TV channel declared he was leaving Lebanon for good.

"I can no longer stay in a land that is a graveyard for dreams. I'm leaving because I'm disgusted by you," Wassim Oraby said in an angry tirade against the ruling elite.

The broadcast resonated with Lebanese who blame sectarian, political leaders for pushing their country to ruin with decades of corruption and infighting.

It is a well-worn path for the Lebanese: to emigrate in search of "any kind of normal", in the words of 30-year-old web developer Darine Tamer, who is filling out immigration forms.

The warehouse explosion on Aug. 4, which killed at least 190 people, served as a final wake-up call for her and many others who were already suffering from an economic collapse without precedent, soaring prices and bouts of unrest.

She will join a diaspora thought to be three times the size of the country's population due to past emigration waves in Lebanon's tumultuous history.

Google Trends shows searches for the word "immigration" from Lebanon hit a 10-year peak after the huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate detonated at Beirut port. Officials have blamed it on negligence.

The blast injured thousands, destroying the homes of people who had just lost jobs and whose savings were trapped in the banks.

The latest exodus of Lebanese packing their bags will strip the country of academics, doctors, artists and others it needs if it is to start over.

They include some who returned in the 1990s to a reconstruction boom after 15 years of civil war, which Lebanon never fully recovered from. Now, they were sending their kids off.

As the last of her siblings still in Lebanon, Tamer never thought she would go too. Her brother lives in Australia and her sister left to Canada. But she is forced to maintain two jobs to catch up with a spiraling currency crash. A startup where she loved working closed this year when investor money dried up.

"Your life is worthless here. You can't build anything. Every few years, you have to reset, and it's hopeless. It's just insane to keep hoping."

ANYWHERE BUT HERE

Jess Talhame, a 23-year-old psychology graduate, is among Lebanese who can draw on dual nationalities their families acquired in past migrations.

Her parents fled the civil war to spend three decades in Canada, popular among Lebanese emigrants. They returned to raise their kids in the country they called home. Now Talhame, who has been without work for a year, has booked a one-way ticket out.

"When the blast hit, I was done," Talhame said. She shuttled between hospital beds after the blast shattered her friend's cheekbones, and days later, her boyfriend was hit by a rubber bullet at a protest against the political elite.

"It's like you want to fight for your country but you also want to stay alive so you can fight for it."

Many with lesser means and fortunes will not be able to leave.

At a recent job interview, Tamer recalled, she laughed when someone asked where she sees herself in five years. "I can't even tell you where I see myself tomorrow, but it's not here."

Google lands Telstra cyber security strategist - Training & Development - Security - iTnews

Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:52 PM PDT

Google has landed the services of Telstra's principal cyber security strategist Kate Healy, marking the first senior hire into its A/NZ cloud security practice.

Healy revealed the change in a LinkedIn post late on Monday this week.

"Looking forward to getting my feet under the desk in my new role and sharing knowledge on Google Cloud security," Healy wrote.

Healy has spent the past three years as Telstra's principal cybersecurity strategist, working "with the CISOs of Australia's largest organisations, understanding their cyber strategy and advising on industry trends and innovations."

"I also showcase Telstra's cyber talent and capability with our customers, unearthing opportunities for co-creation and innovation," she said on her profile.

Healy has also held security roles at several banks, including CBA and NAB in Australia, and Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore.

While Google has always had security specialists aligned to its A/NZ cloud business, iTnews understands Healy is the company's first senior hire to the security practice.

A Telstra spokesperson was contacted for comment on Healy's vacated role at the telco.

The telco also recently lost its Asia Pacific chief information security officer Berin Lautenbach to Toll Group - replaced by Services Australia's CISO Narelle Devine - and its general manager for cyber security operations and threat management Grant McKechnie to Endeavour Group.
