"We're a full stack retail media platform with an easy user interface where a brand can log in, create their own ads and we give them the ability to serve sponsored posts and banners to websites they choose. It's like Google AdWords on your own website.

"Most recently we've won Ocado, Sainsbury's and Argos in the UK and then Groupon in the US. These weren't easy because they were using our competitor, Criteo, and they use some pretty aggressive tactics to try and keep clients."

CitrusAd was founded in 2017 by Mr Moran and a former NoQ employee, Nick Paech.

"You go into your first start-up ... and feel like nothing can break you, then you come out like a frail old man six years later."

NoQ was similar to many skip-the-line apps operating today, which let customers place and pay for orders online in advance of arriving at a venue.

Mr Moran was successful in raising capital from the likes of Bendigo Bank and had clients such as Hungry Jack's and Noodle Box, but things went sour when he expanded to the US and took on capital from some US backers.

Within eight months, he said, the investors had brought in new management and forced Mr Moran and Mr Paech out of their own company.

"We had six years of making mistakes ... it wasn't a nice ending. I spent six months looking for a job and moved back in with my parents in Brisbane," Mr Moran said.

"I was either overqualified or underqualified, or not a fit for a corporate.

"You go into your first start-up ... and feel like nothing can break you, then you come out like a frail old man six years later. However you do have better decision-making skills and you're a lot sharper. You may not have the bravado, but you're a lot more realistic and you know the pitfalls to look for."

Raising capital in the COVID-era provided a fresh challenge. Moelis began doing due diligence on the company three days before the sharemarket plunged and the world went into lockdown.

Mr Moran said he didn't think the deal would go through, but Moelis had proceeded and the surge in online shopping during the pandemic had been a boost for the company. He had seen four times the volume of website traffic and revenue had tripled to a run rate of $8.5 million for the calendar year.

"It's all new ground for me. The last business was 35 employees and this one is already 55," he said.

Moelis Australia asset management managing director Jaron Yuen said he liked the fact that Mr Moran was a second-time founder and had a sophisticated knowledge of the industry.

"He's a good founder, he's got good traction and an excellent customer base," he said.

"Then looking at the market and the shift away from large aggregated ad buyers like Criteo, they've got something different which is more akin to where the market is going."

Moelis is onto its second venture capital fund, with a total of $90 million in capital to deploy across the two. It is also an investor in Bruce Buchanan's marketing tech company ROKT and has had three exits to date including the $US245 million ($357 million) acquisition of Avoka by Temenos and Pearson's acquisition of Smart Sparrow for $US25 million.

Moelis VC funds target growth-stage companies and tends to tip between $5 million and $8 million into investments.
