Keyword research is the first step to achieving great SEO and driving your website's organic traffic. You can think of keywords as the building blocks of SEO — without them, there's no foundation on which to build your SEO campaign. The blocks you choose will determine the strength and stability of your SEO architecture. Finding the right blocks is simply a matter of seeking out keywords that match your customer's search intent.

A successful SEO marketing campaign starts with finding the right keywords. After all, ranking for the wrong keywords, or choosing a highly competitive keyword, can ruin all your efforts and bring you right back to square one. That's why I've put together this brief guide to choosing the right key search terms so you can build a strong SEO marketing campaign with confidence.

As the CMO of Regal Assets, this is the process I've used with great success in earning us a top-ranking SEO position in the alternative investing niche. Refining and mastering our SEO research techniques has increased our organic search traffic by over 75% — resulting in huge bottom-line growth.

Let's take a quick look at a tried-and-true method of conducting advanced SEO research in 2020. By following the steps outlined below, you can build a high-ranking website with confidence knowing that your key search terms are in sync with your customers' search intent.

Step 1: Choose your tool.

Keyword research in 2020 requires the use of third-party tools. All of the leading SEO tools have some sort of free tier or free trial, so I recommend getting started using those before you make a long-term investment in their software.

It doesn't matter which keyword research tool you choose because the top brands offer nearly identical features and ultimately accomplish the same task: pinpointing long-tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. Some of the most reliable SEO tools include:

• Ahrefs.

• SEMrush.

• Moz Keyword Explorer.

• Google Ads Keyword Planner.

• Ubersuggest.

Step 2: List your business-specific topics.

The next step is to jot down a list of topics that directly relate to your website or business. Think of products, services or questions that your customers might have in mind when shopping in your niche. Create a list with a minimum of five topics and a maximum of 20.

For instance, an e-commerce store offering baseball equipment might list topics such as "comfortable baseball glove," "cheap batting helmet," "affordable athletic cup," or "what equipment do you need for baseball?" These topics will give you an excellent, focused base from which you can create customer-centric content.

Step 3: Draw out search terms from topics.

With a base of topics to draw from, you can parse out a mix of long- and short-tail keywords. This is where your SEO research tool will be put to use. For this example, let's use Google Ads Keyword Planner. This tool, as well as its competitors, will take your research topics and generate a list of keywords, organized according to their search volume, difficulty and estimated conversions.

If you're using Google Ads, generating a list of keywords is straightforward. Once you've signed into your Google Ads account, follow these steps:

• Click the "Tools" icon in the top-right corner.

• Select the "Planning" tab and click "Keyword Planner."

• Enter 1-2 topics from Step 2 into the "Find new keywords" search box, and press "Enter."

• Sort by keyword difficulty (KD).

• Write down medium- and high-volume search terms from keywords with midrange KD.

• Repeat this process for all your topics generated in Step 2.

The higher the difficulty, the greater the competition from big brands and domain authorities. For each topic, select 10 to 25 short- and long-tail keywords with midrange KD and search volume metrics.

Step 4: Consider user intent.

User intent is the key to SEO keyword research in 2020. Google's PageRank algorithm is getting better at weeding out keyword manipulation and flagging websites that stuff keywords that don't fit their web property's niche.

Before choosing a keyword, ask yourself whether it's relevant enough to warrant writing a blog post about. If you're unsure whether your business relates to your keyword, discard it and select another that more closely matches what your customers might be searching for.

For example, if your user's intent is to find out more information about what equipment they need to play baseball in California, don't try to rank for "buy baseball glove online." This is a transactional keyword that doesn't suit your user's search intent, which is to find information about baseball equipment rules.

Step 5: Position yourself as an authority.

Your keywords should reflect general informational articles that position your company as an authoritative source on the topic. An SEO marketing campaign sits at the top of your sales funnel because searchers will naturally familiarize themselves with your brand as they find more and more valuable information about their niche from your website.

In other words, your keywords shouldn't reflect a searcher's intent to buy right then and there, but rather to provide them with valuable content that helps them make a purchasing decision. Over time, searchers will recognize your property as an authority on the subject and will return to your website when it's time to buy.

Put it all together.

Remember that your website's visitors are either looking to solve a problem or obtain more information about a problem they have — otherwise, they wouldn't be using a search engine. Keyword research is now more of an art than a science. The qualitative process of understanding user intent and ensuring that your keywords match is the secret to keyword research success in 2020.

The method described above should provide your website with a foundation of between 50 and 500 rankable keywords that match your visitor's search intent. From there, you have the building blocks to start a successful content marketing campaign and establish yourself as a trusted source for information in your niche.
