The steadily-growing vegan trend is not limited to food; this has been confirmed by a recent analysis of the fashion search engine Lyst. The vegan Stan Smith sneaker, designed by Stella McCartney with Adidas, leads the rankings of the most popular and sought-after products in Germany. In total, 80% more sustainable and vegan fashion was searched for this year than last year.
In its recent analysis, the fashion search engine Lyst examined the most popular sustainable brands and products among Germans and also drew international comparisons. The top 10 most searched items are dominated by bags, sneakers, and jackets. First place goes to the Stan Smith sneaker, a vegan product.
Lyst was founded in London in 2010 and is the world's leading fashion search engine. It is used by more than 70 million people from over 120 countries. Lyst's goal is to provide consumers with an overview of the broad range of fashion brands and retailers available online. With Lyst, users can not only see if and in which shops certain fashion products are still available, but also discover sales and offers as well as comparing prices across retailers. The company currently has 119 employees in London and New York.
According to Katy Lubin, communications director at Lyst, sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. From her point of view, it is younger buyers in particular who are driving this trend. "Millennials question exactly where and how their clothing is produced and place more value on fair manufacturing conditions than on fast fashion and the latest trends," says Lubin.

SANTA CRUZ — Of all the craft breweries in Santa Cruz, Seabright Brewery ranked as the most popular, according to a study conducted by C+R Research, a firm based out of Chicago, that provides market research about businesses, sociology and cultural patterns.
In the study, the city of Santa Cruz had seven craft breweries per every 50,000 people, ranking 14th out of a list of 25 cities nationwide with the most craft breweries per 50,000 people. Portland, Maine, is the U.S. city with the most breweries per 50,000 people, 18 breweries.
The study analyzed data from more than 500 U.S. cities and used Google's search volume to determine the most popular brewery in each of those cities. A craft brewery is defined as small and independent: with 6 million barrels or less of beer produced every year, less than 25% of the brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member and it has a Tax and Trade Bureau Brewer's Notice.
The study found the most popular craft brewery in Santa Cruz to be Seabright Brewery. Being the first year of the study, no other Santa Cruz breweries were ranked.
Established in 1988, Seabright Brewery was created when co-owners Charlie Meehan and Keith Cranmer joined forces. Meehan was a home brewer winning homebrew competitions and his childhood friend Cranmer had just sold his previous business, and together they decided to open a brewery. It has been in the same location, 519 Seabright Ave. in Santa Cruz, for its 31 years. Seabright Brewery is the city's second brewery, second to the Front Street Pub, which closed a few years after Seabright opened, Meehan said.
"Craft beer is…it takes a lot of chances," Meehan said. "It provides people with so many more choices of flavorful things…And you can tell them put this on there or do that…We make beer that the large breweries just won't take the chances to make."
The brewery has 65 employees. With about 35 tables outside, the patio is the brewery's "best advertisement," Meehan said. The brewery remodeled about 15 years ago and took over the space of the bakery next to it.
Meehan said the brewery's most popular beer is The Blur IPA, named after Santa Cruz Bicycles' Blur bike. The most popular foods are its burgers and Super Sammy Salad.
Seabright Brewery has won numerous awards since 1991. Most recently, it won an award for its oatmeal stout at the 2019 North American Beer Awards International Beer Awards and an award for its cream ale Sameting at the 2018 California State Fair Commercial Beer Competition.
The beer is made on-site. Tim Carpenter, the assistant brewer, said it takes about two weeks to brew the beer and longer if its lagered. Peter Landman is the brewmaster.
Despite the popularity of the brewery's drinks, Meehan doesn't drink. He has been sober for 21 years, making the decision for the sake of his children, he said.
"It's hard being in a bar and not drinking," Meehan said. "People want to drink with me all the time."
Seabright Brewery is the only brewery in the county with a full bar, according to Meehan. He said the brewery is also set apart from other breweries because it has a dog-friendly patio and is family-oriented. It has live music from local bands from 6:30-10:30 p.m. every Friday night. It is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. during the winter.
A craft beer trend
Northern California was one of the places where the craft brewing movement started, according to Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association. Breweries have grown in popularity over the past 40 years, especially in the mid-to-late 1990s and in the early 2010s to present day, he said. Watson identified three reasons for brewery growth: more demand for fuller flavored beer, more variety and locally made products; more retailers recognizing this demand and expanding their offerings and improved market access laws and regulations.
According to a 2018 U.S. Brewery Count, 7,346 craft breweries exist nationwide. Compared to the previous year, the U.S. craft beer industry grew by nearly 4%. California is home to 841 craft breweries, with more than 3.4 million barrels of craft beer produced every year, according to California's Craft Beer Sales & Production Statistics, 2018.
